Surfin’ USA

The Best surfing on the east coast…that’s right: according to the greater surfing community.

When the Newport City Council wanted to change the seascape on parts of the famed Cliff Walk that would effect the quality of surfing, surfers up and down the coast protested.

The protesters claimed that this was a unique area with magnificent rollers and the proposed changes would spoil the best surfing on the east coast.

The council backed down and made other plans.

You can surf all year long…most popular surfing areas in greater Newport:

1. Second Beach in Middletown: Special area dedicated to surfing. A mile of sand and dunes between Sachuest Point Wildlife sanctuary, Purgatory Chasm, and the Norman Bird Sanctuary. Surfers and paddlers populate the west end near Purgatory. Kite surfing is allowed at the east end at certain times of the year.

2. First Beach in Newport: half-mile strand that sees some extreme action around stormy weather.

3. Cliff Walk, near the Breakers: Intense surfing with huge rollers and crashing surf…all over and around the multiple and often dangerous rock formations. Not for the faint of heart.
